What If The Phone Rings 2001/2003
Urs Fischer made the originals of the life-size woman-shaped candles in Styrofoam. The solid casting of each piece requires 250 kg of paraffin and microwax and is equipped with a branched system of wicks. The coloured areas in the finished pieces are created by pouring coloured wax directly into the negative moulds. As the sculptures are burnt, they are transformed by the creation of unexpected deformations and craters. Those who buy these sculptures, which are meant to be burn and melt, have a lifelong option to purchase a new sculpture at the production price.

Skinny Afternoon 2003
The commode and skeleton are solid aluminium castings; the Styrofoam original was burnt out during the casting process. Fischer then partially applied paint to the as-cast pieces. The attached mirror was treated with acid to achieve artificial signs of aging that will intensify over time. The work was produced in May 2003 for the Venice Biennale. In connection with the same work, five cast aluminium chairs were also produced from Styrofoam originals: “Chair for a Ghost: Thomas” and “Chair for a Ghost: Urs” (“Stuhl für einen Geist: Thomas” und “Stuhl für einen Geist: Urs”).
