< | >

Hans Josephsohn was born in Königsberg (East Prussia) in 1920. At the age of 17 he left his homeland to study art in Florence. Because of his Jewish heritage, he was forced to leave Italy in 1938 and came to Zurich where he was a student of Otto Müller until 1943. He continues to live and work in Zurich until today.

Werke
Since 1994, the sculptor has had all of his works cast in Sittertal. According to Josephsohn’s requirements the bronzes should have a blunted, matte and porous surface, evoking the brittleness of plaster. When possible, the bronze is left in its as-cast state, and patina carefully applied to selected areas. In order to better meet this requirement, we have worked together to develop alloys and patinas over the years through collaborative experimentation.

Museum La Congiunta
The Museum La Congiunta opened in Giornico (Tessin) in 1993. The architects Peter Märkli and Stefan Bellwalder designed a minimalist concrete structure for the work of the sculptor. At that point in time, the Museum was the only location outside of his atelier where his work could regularly be seen. Visitors can pick up the key at the nearby ‘Ristorante Giornico’.

Kesselhaus Josephsohn
The Kesselhaus Josephsohn was established next to the Kunstgiesserei to create a location for the storage and presentation of Josephsohn’s sculptures. A large number of his works can here be preserved under optimal conditions, and also made accessible to the public.
