Restoration
< | >

In the long life of a metal sculpture restoration work occasionally becomes necessary. Damage can occur due to accidents during transportation, as a result of structural problems, or because of weather and environmental effects. Sculptures that are situated outdoors often develop efflorescence or the internal core when penetrated by water sustains frost damage. In certain regions, at times considerable corrosion damage occurs due to high concentrations of sulphur in the air.

The restoration work consequently most often required is modification of the patina, removal of cracks and fissures, the installation of drainage openings, as well as gentle preservation with wax.

The main concern in all restoration work is the careful treatment of the original. The techniques used should be as similar as possible to those methods employed at the time when the work was created. During the restoration, consequential damage often presents a larger problem than the original damage itself. What is most important, therefore, is to make all interventions reversible whenever possible. The Kunstgiesserei works in close cooperation with conservators and specially trained restorers.
